Finished the Ironman 70.3 for Leukemia

Finally, got a chance to update my blog. It's been a week since I finished my race. My favorite part of the race, other than finishing, was watching the first wave of the swim start (the pros) as the steam was coming off the river. They looked like they were being boiled in the water.

My wave was last so that meant that I started 2 hours later. It was both a good thing and a bad thing. The good part was that I was able to avoid a falling oak tree that injured 3 riders. The link below is a newpaper article that gives a good first hand account of the race. Also, this is a link to the results and photos. I've been waiting to post my race pics but they're not available yet.

The bad part of starting later is that I started the run 2 hours later in 100 degree heat. I finished in 5 hours and 41 minutes which put me in 51st place out of 219 men in my age group (45-49). It was the slowest half-marathon that I've ever done but considering the heat and the rolling hills, which I wasn't expecting. I'm happy with my effort. I ran the whole course except to drink and throw water on my head at the aid stations.

Next year, Barbara wants us to do it as a relay- I do the 1.2 mile swim, Ryan does the 56 mile bike, and Jesse does the 13.1 mile run. Sounds good to me.

Thanks for all your support. God bless.

Thank You For Your Support--- I'm Ready to Roll

Hi Everyone,

First, of all thank you all for your support and helping me raise $5,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Faith + Effort = God's Perfect Plan.

We did our final training as a group this weekend. We were at La Jolla shores on Saturday doing our practice triathlon. In fact, we started around 7am , right about the time we were having a 4.0 earthquake 19 miles offshore and giant squid were washing up on shore. Good thing we were totally unaware of what was going on in the ocean.

I am heading up this Thursday to Santa Rosa to prepare for my triathlon on July 19th (Vineman Ironman 70.3) . The triathlon is near Santa Rosa, CA-Sonoma County (1hr. north of San Francisco). If you can make it I would love to see you all up there.

I will give you all an update after the race. You can go on the website above and see how I did. My race # 2263. If you pray, please pray for me this weekend.

Thank you, John Matias
